You can sit around a table, pen in hand, as you start setting goals. You feel the excitement as you capture the plan. This is what your life will look like a month, a year, five or ten from now. Right now, in that moment, you’re unstoppable.

The problem is that it doesn’t last. Motivation fades. You can affirm, visualise and plan all you want – but it will evaporate. Finishing a project is darn satisfying. So is starting one. It’s that bog in the middle that gets you.

It doesn’t have to, though. After all, you achieve some of your goals. Sure, some are tiny and easy enough to smash out in an afternoon. Others aren’t and you achieved them anyway.

What makes a goal achievable?

  • You have to actually want it. If you go to medical school just to make your parents happy, you’ll fight yourself every day. If you want it for you, then you’ll go much further.
  • You need strategies to get you through the rough patches. It won’t always be like rowing downstream.
  • Action, every day.
  • And don’t forget to balance your health, energy and sanity.

I could go on, of course, but you get the idea. Here’s the fun question, though:

What do these all have in common?

The answer is simple. You can’t choose to do any of them.

You can’t choose to like something.

It won’t always be easy – and you won’t always handle challenges as you’d like.

You can’t choose to feel motivated every day.

And you can’t choose to have health and energy. (If you could, no one would pick the alternative.)

These things happen on their own. You’re not powerless, though – you can do a lot to improve your chances of any of these coming. You could write a to-do list, exercise and take time for yourself.

Still, there are no guarantees when it comes to these things. You can prepare as best you can, but it’s not you who decides to feel motivated.

It’s some other part of you.

The good news is that you can influence this part. You can work with it to find more energy, drive and inspiration. All you need is to learn its language first.

Seize control of the automatic. Set goals with real power. Keep reading to learn how:
