Watch me drunkenly refute my narcissism

After writing about why guided meditations are a waste of time, I received this delightful comment on LinkedIn:

“I am guessing you are a narcissist… the whole “everyone should do what I think” mentality is all over this article.”

Oh, thank goodness! I haven’t been accused of narcissism in a long time. I was starting to think I was doing something wrong.

Anyway, I just spend the afternoon drinking with psychologists. Based on what I learned today while knocking back beer, I’m not a narcissist. I’m nothing more than your garden variety arrogant jerk.

It’s nice to get professional confirmation of what I always suspected.

Because you know who else says “everyone should do what I think”?

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Engineers.

Leaders in the community, spiritual or otherwise.

Anyone who has a clue.

Anyone who sees a better way for others to live their lives.

It turns out I have large, distinguished cohort.

I was arrogant enough to think I could master the mysteries of the mind. Pure hubris drove me to commit years and tens of thousands of dollars into my training. And that just made it worse, because now I know I’m stronger than your problems.

I’m arrogant enough to think anyone can improve their life. I’m enough of a tosser to see exactly what to do to free you from your own prison.

I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again.

Gosh, could I be any more smug?

(The answer is yes. You ain’t seen nothing yet.)

So you could see a self-anointed guru who’ll say, “aww gees, sure, I guess I can maybe try to help you”.

Or you could talk to someone who knows what they’re doing. I don’t believe I can help you – I’ve seen it so many times that I know it.

Know with a capital K.

No doubt in my mind.

(Even when I’m sober.)

And here’s the best thing I can say you to:

You can experience that, right now. You can hear pure conviction that you will become stronger, happier, healthier and more amazing… combined with the skills to make it happen.

All you need to do is listen.

And experience.

And be even more than you ever have been.
